Women from diverse backgrounds meet to discuss Democratic activism in Ohio

On Wednesday night, women of the Ohio Democratic Asian American Caucus and women of the Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus came together to start a dialogue about Democratic activism in Ohio. Several candidates attended the event as well and had the opportunity to meet with the women and talk about the issues that are most important to their communities

Candidates in attendance were Danielle Blue, Candidate for Ohio Senate – 16th District, David Robinson, Candidate for Representative – 12th District, Jan Lanier, Candidate for Ohio House – 2nd District, Julie Houston, Candidate for Delaware County Recorder. Stop by their websites to learn more about these great candidates.

Ohio’s First Lady Frances Strickland was the keynote of the event. Mrs. Strickland was enthusiastically welcomed by a strong showing and presence of Asian American women. Ohio’s First Lady discussed the importance of the Ohio Democratic Party’s outreach initiatives targeting Ohio’s diverse constituencies.

The event was a partnership between the Asian American Caucus and the Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus and part of the Ohio Democratic Party’s Winning Ohio Together program – which unites diverse constituencies under the common goal of forwarding Democratic issues and candidates.

Residents will have an opportunity to mingle with local Democratic candidates and mascots during Main Street Delaware's First Friday event, set for Friday, April 4.

The city's First Fridays are organized by Main Street Delaware to encourage residents to explore the city's historic Downtown.

As usual, Downtown shops will stay open late for visitors.

Anyone who stops by the Delaware County Democratic Headquarters, 12 N. Sandusky St., will be able to visit with Delaware's Democratic candidates who will appear on the November ballot.

From 5:30 to 8 p.m., residents will be able to stop in and speak with candidates, including Jan Lanier for state representative; David Robinson for Congress; Roger Van Sickle and Neil Neidhart for commissioner; and Julie Houston for county recorder.

Meanwhile, local mascots will mingle on the city's sidewalks.

Residents can gather for pictures with American Electric Power's Louie the Lightning Bug, the Ohio Wesleyan University Bishop, the Delaware General Health District's "Bac," the Delaware District Library's Dewey D. Chipmunk, the Grady Memorial Hospital's Grady Bear, the Delaware County Bank and Trust's Money Bunny and Delaware Hayes High School's Pacer.

Children who stop by Simple Indulgences' new location at 31 N. Sandusky St. will be able to create their own mask.

Simple Indulgences recently made the move from West William Street.

Residents also can visit the new location of Pet Stuff. The store recently moved a few storefronts north to 77 N. Sandusky St.

Beehive Books, 25 N. Sandusky St., will accept votes for residents' favorite mascot.

The event has been hailed as "Mask-cot" Madness by Main Street.

It's all part of Main Street's efforts to bring new and fun elements to Delaware's downtown area, said Jesse Carter, spokesman for Main Street Delaware.

"Everybody, especially the kids, likes the costumed characters," Carter said.

With the possibility of rain April 4, Carter said he is looking for a possible indoor space for "Mask-cot" Madness.

Main Street's March First Friday event didn't fare well as Central Ohio was blanketed in record snowfall, Carter said.

The Delaware Fire Department will be on hand during the event.

Residents can mingle with firefighters and check out one of the department's trucks, which will be somewhere Downtown.

"That's part of the idea of First Friday -- you come Downtown and explore and see what's around the corner," Carter said.
